"Swimming Up" a Practice
We ask that your Wahoo please attend their assigned age group practice. Each age group practice set is structured based on the technical skill level, physical capabilities, and endurance for the swimmers in it. For example, our 10/12U practice will be much more technically advanced and more intense physically than 6/8U. The last thing we want is a swimmer to be in a practice session that is beyond their capabilities - it can impact their confidence, slow down a practice lane, and create a safety issue (e.g. a younger swimmer gets fatigued trying to keep up and can get distressed).
However, there are times when our coaching team may invite a younger swimmer to move up to an older practice. This is usually for our club (year round swimmers), or for swimmers who are at the top of their age group and can physically handle a more challenging practice and are technically proficient in all 4 strokes. The coaching staff will only do this when they are sure the swimmer is able to do the strokes at the same technical level and keep the pace with the other swimmers in that age group. In this circumstance, the coaching staff will first have a conversation with the parents about the option to "swim up" to an older practice, and will partner with the family on the final placement (and it is ok for the swimmer to also stay in their current age group if that is decided to be the best thing for them).
When Do the Wahoo NOT Practice?
While we try to maximize the time the Wahoo can practice, the safety of our swimmers is our priority. Please be sure you have downloaded the Swimtopia Mobile App and enabled alerts as that is how we will let our families know if practice is cancelled (we use the alerts function to send out time sensitive information).
Below are our practice cancellation guidelines:
(1) 80% chance or higher of thunderstorms within 2 hours of practice
(2) 80% chance or higher of heavy rain within 2 hours of practice - The Wahoo have practiced in light rain before (when thunder/lightening is not present), but not when it is pouring buckets. If the skies open during practice and will last more than 15 minutes, we will cancel practice. Also, if it thunders, swimmers sit out for 30 minutes (cycle repeats if the thunder is heard again). We will use a lightening app to verify lightening in the area (e.g. WeatherBug).
(3) Air temperature below 60 degrees
(4) Pool temperature below 74 - 77 degrees (dependent on age group). We will also consider holding practice if the air temp + the pool temp = 150 degrees or higher.
(5) Green/Brown Out - Practice will be cancelled as we will need to clear the pool and have the pool management company address this.
(6) When LCPC does not have running water.
